One of the things that they tell you during the antenatal classes is about what to pack for your stay at the hospital. Firstly, they recommend preparing a bag for the labour and birth, and then setting aside the things you need for the remainder of your stay at the hospital for your partner to bring in later. That way you don't end up bringing a huge trolley bag with you when you go to the hospital.
I will be giving birth at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin which is one of 3 specialist maternity hospitals in Dublin. The hospital gave us a list of things that they recommend we pack for our stay with them. If you have a normal delivery, you'll be expected to stay for 3 days in the hospital (5 days for c-section). So they recommend that the partner bring in a change clothes each day, rather than bringing everything with you on your first day. They also said to have the bag for labour and birth to be prepared when you are 36 weeks along, just in case.
Bag for labour and birth
- Loose fitting nightdress or an old long t-shirt - baju kelawar it is, Malaysian style y'all!
- Disposable underwear - erm no. I'll just bring some old, loose cotton ones.
- Warm socks, slippers and light dressing gown
- Hair scrunchies and brush
- Toiletries ie shower gel, sponge, toothbrush, toothpaste, deoderant, etc
- Maternity sanitary pads
- Large, dark coloured towel
- Fresh night clothes to wear for after the birth (ideally front opening for breast feeding) - Primark ones are the best, comfy and cheap.
- Nursing bras
- For baby: sleepsuits, vest, cardigan, wooly har and nappies - leceh jugak beranak winter ni.
- Camera and batteries
- Money for parking meters - because the hospital doesn't have underground parking so street parking it is.
Bag for stay in hospital - for mummy
- Fresh pyjamas/nightdress for every day - do they expect me to wear pyjamas during the day too? I don't think so! Front opening shirts is my plan, together with kain batik hehe.
- Disposable underwear - not happening.
- Maternity sanitary pads
- Nursing bras and breast pads
- Loose fitting clothes for going home - maternity clothes will do.
Bag for hospital stay - for baby
- Sleepsuits
- Nappies
- Vests
- Cardigans
- Cotton wool
- Baby wipes
- Baby oil
- Bath towel
- Baby hats and bibs
- Baby mittens and booties
- Baby blanket for going home
- Outfit for going home

I haven't got most of the stuff on the lists above so need to get a shopping list going. Now that I'm 8 months along, all I feel like doing is lying down, not waddling about in Mothercare. But I have to push that aside, get up you lazy woman you!

DeleteHaha.. Imagine, no one told me that I was still gonna look pregger'ish after birth i.e it doesn't work like a stuffed bag! Hence, I brought baju biasa utk balik rumah.. CONFIRM tak muat kan! :P :P So maternity clothes for going home is good ;)

ReplyDeletei prepared my bag when 1 entered 3rd trimester. sgt laju kan?? wel, suke shopping sbnrnye.hehe. plus i kept on having false contraction, dats y prepare early. it was helpful. as ayra was born right after i entred 37 weeks kan. so..prepare!!!
