Due to my family history of type II diabetes, the doctor recommended that I do a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) when I was 28 weeks along. So on Monday, I had my test. They told me to fast from 12am the night before and come in at 8am the next day. I wasn't allowed to eat anything until the whole procedure was over. They took my fasting blood sample and I was asked to drink a jug of Lucozade in 15 minutes. I don't even like Lucozade, why can't it be Diet Coke? But then my husband told me in Malaysia, you actually have to drink pure glucose which is so sweet you'll probably be sick after. So I was thankful I only had to drink Lucozade.
About an hour after drinking the Lucozade, they took another blood sample, and two more at each hourly interval after. When the midwife checked my arms to find my veins, she said it was going to be a tough one! Thankfully, she was an experienced midwife so not too much poking was involved.
The whole procedure lasted for 4 hours. At the end, they gave us a sandwich and tea to drink. I got a cheese and salad sadwich. By the end of it I was ready to go home and rest but I had to go back to work, boo! The midwife said she would call me the next day if the results came back abnormal.
The next day, at 845am I got a call from the hospital. Cuak-ness! Turns out it was nothing serious, my iron levels were a bit low so she suggested that I start taking iron supplements. I texted the husband to ask him to bring some home and he started firing questions at me: what is it low iron or low hemoglobin levels, what was the hemoglobin count, etc. Obviously I didn't ask the mid wife all those questions so he got a bit annoyed but said he'd get some on the way home. I told him the midwife recommended Ferrograd C so told him to get those ones specifically.
When I got home, he told me that he got a different brand, Galfer instead. Aiyooo.
Me: But the mid wife said Ferrograd C!
Him: The tablet is too big sayang, you sure cannot telan.
Me: Oh eh? can cut or not?
Him: No need to cut. Galfer is in syrup form.
Me: But is it suitable for pregnant women? Should have just bought Ferrograd C like the midwife said!
Him: Suitable laa I checked already. You trust the midwife more than me!
Me: okok, so how do I take this?
Him: Just 2 tablespoons with orange juice once day.
Me: Ok.
A few hours later...
Him: Eh, think you have to take it on an empty stomach. Oops sorry.
Me: Whaaat? I took it after dinner kut just now!
Him: Heh sorry forgot about that bit.
Doctor bertauliah betul.
So in summary, I don't have gestational diabetes but am a bit anaemic. Also, check the instructions on any medication yourself instead of relying on other people aka your husband.
