the unknown

I'm not one to comment on controversial matters. But recent headlines have caused me to make an exception.

We've been made aware of Malaysian students overseas who have "changed". People are quick to judge and some are beginning to stereotype all students studying overseas, saying all will "change" as well. As someone who has studied overseas, I can say that these cases are one in a hundred. Ultimately, it depends on you, your upbringing, and your surroundings. If you surround yourself with positive energy, insyaallah all will be fine. There are many distractions overseas, and for each person it's different. Imagine being away from home for the first time, no one to look over your shoulder, it's just you and the world. It's very easy to get sidetracked. For me, my "hantu" was shopping. It took every ounce of my energy to not go down Oxford Street after my lectures. Alhamdullillah, I got over it, and now I am a very skilled window shopper.

Studying overseas was one of the best experiences in my life. It taught me to be independent, exposed me to people of different cultures, made me learn to cook (very important skill!) and most importantly, it made me realise how much my family means to me. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, so true indeed.

For those who are worried about going overseas to study, don't be. As long as you know what your priorities are, Allah will guide you to the right path. Sure there are distractions, but they exist anywhere. Be strong, stay focused, and make your parents proud. Insyaallah you will succeed.
